2nd Schumpeter School Professionals Day (03.04.2014)

On the topic "Regional location factors in the global competition" about 150 guests, university members and entrepreneurs of the region came to the Campus Freudenberg. They discussed the internationalization strategies of family-run companies, and especially focused the region Bergisches Land. After the opening by the Speaker of the Board of the Schumpeter School Foundation, Prof. Dr. Norbert Koubek, the Rector of the Bergische Universität, Prof. Dr. Lambert T. Koch, the dean of the Schumpeter School of Business and Economics, Prof. Dr. Michael Fallgatter, and the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dipl.-Ing Heinz Schmersal, the first part of the event focused on the importance of regional location factors in the course of globalization. From a scientific perspective, Prof. Dr. Peter Witt, Schumpeter School of Business and Economics, and from a practical point of view Michael Wenge, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid. The two indispensable elements for successful entrepreneurial activity were clear: risk-oriented and innovation-oriented entrepreneurship as well as suitable socio-economic conditions, in particular regionally related to the Bergische Land and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.

Three different internationalization strategies of regional enterprises were then presented and discussed. Dr. Manfred Diederichs, personally liable partner of Karl Diederichs KG, described the model, production and export implemented at Dirostahl to focus on only one location. Christoph Koslowski, managing partner of the Hühoco Group, explained the successful construction of numerous foreign production plants in Europe, America and Asia in order to supply the individual international markets directly. In the third example, Wolfgang Fuchs, Managing Partner of the Köbo-Donghua Group, presented the internationalization strategy in which the Wuppertal company is part of the Chinese Donghua family company.

"The world market leaders include a larger number of medium-sized companies. They have achieved this with very different internationalization strategies and often remained largely unknown - these are hidden champions ", notes Koubek. These companies offer attractive and career-promoting jobs, especially for young academics, but little is known. Against this background, the panel and plenary agreed to develop and intensify the contact between the Schumpeter School as a scientific institution and the regional companies as a central part of the practice.
